Illinois Roof Insurance Claim Checklist

Within 24 hours of the storm

• Photograph all visible damage from the ground — roof slopes, gutters, downspouts, AC fins, mailbox, siding.
• Note the storm date and time (check weather apps or NWS reports for your zip).
• If water is entering the home, call (630) 313-9805 for emergency tarping before cleanup.
• Do not climb on the roof or make permanent repairs before documentation.

Before you call your insurance company

• Schedule a professional roof inspection with photo documentation (AJ Roofing provides this free).
• Have your policy number and deductible amount ready.
• Understand ACV vs. RCV — Replacement Cost Value pays full replacement minus deductible; ACV deducts depreciation.
• Avoid signing an Assignment of Benefits (AOB) with door-to-door contractors.

When filing the claim

• File within 30 days of the storm when possible — Illinois allows longer, but delays weaken claims.
• Describe damage as hail/wind impact to shingles, flashing, vents, and gutters.
• Request an adjuster inspection and ask your roofer to be present on-site.
• Keep a log of every call: date, representative name, claim number.

At the adjuster meeting

• Walk the property with the adjuster — point out dented vents, granule loss, lifted shingles.
• Ensure the scope includes ice & water shield, drip edge, starter strip, and ridge cap if replacing.
• Ask for a written Scope of Loss before authorizing work.
• If items are missing, request a supplement — not all adjusters catch code-required upgrades.

Choosing your contractor (avoid storm chasers)

• Verify Illinois licensing and insurance certificates (call the carrier to confirm).
• Use a contractor with a local Orland Park / SW Suburbs address — not a temporary post-storm office.
• Get a detailed written estimate with exact shingle product and warranty terms.
• Never pay more than 10–15% upfront; pay balance only after walkthrough approval.
